Ansky to Kafka, Scholem to Schulz: Creating Modern Jewish Culture in Central and Eastern Europe This course explores the ways in which Jewish artists, writers, scientists, and intellectuals responded to the challenges of modern, urban life in Central and Eastern Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. It does so largely by engaging directly with primary sources in their social and historical contexts and, hence, is also a course about reading. Among the individuals we will be looking at are: S. Ansky, Franz Kafka, Sholem Aleichem, Siegmund Freud, Gershom Scholem, and Bruno Schulz.
