Hillel J. Kieval, the Gloria M. Goldstein Professor of Jewish History and Thought, has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Jewish Research (AAJR). Founded in 1920, the AAJR is composed of the most prominent scholars of Jewish studies in North America.
Kieval is an internationally recognized scholar of Jewish history, particularly the transformations of Jewish culture in Central Europe from the Enlightenment to the second world war. His most recent book, Blood Inscriptions: Science, Modernity, and Ritual Murder in Fin de Siècle Europe, tells the story of five trials that invoked the medieval concept of blood libel to put Jewish men on trial for murders that they did not commit.
