This course focuses on Indian writing in the context of World Literature. Students will read a variety of texts originally written in English, and translations from different Indian languages. The course takes a chronological/thematic route of the Indian literature with focus on contemporary writers such as Salman Rushdie and Arundhati Roy to lesser known but equally important vernacular writers such as, Vinod Kumar Shukl (Hindi), Mahasweta Devi (Bangla), U R Ananthamurthy (Kannada) and Ambai (Tamil). We will begin with the post-independence period and address such questions as the consequences of partition, the nation-building process, gender, and then move to the globalization and economic liberalization of India in 1990s.
