Ampersand goes GLOACAL

The Safe Asylum Politics and Pathways Ampersand cohort embarked on a cultural and culinary journey to the Global Food Market in Kirkwood, Missouri, to witness the migration through a unique lens in our very own St. Louis community. Wandering through aisles lined with international flags, we traced a map of the world in the Midwest: one built not by borders, but by flavors. Each shelf held items and delicacies foreign to us, but each deeply familiar to the various migrant diasporas present in our city. Each group selected a rare product representing the various countries students have specialized in over the course of the program and presented its significance through the focus of cultural identity, resettlement, and adaptation. Just as the migrant experiences we have studied in class, each culinary product had its own unique journey to reach St. Louis, demonstrating the widespread versatility and application of migration patterns and journeys. This understanding pushes us to question: If we can appreciate the global pathways that bring food to our tables, why do we struggle to extend that same recognition to the people who travel similar routes?
